Spring Cleaning: Closet Organization & Decluttering

Let’s put away our winter clothes and clean!

Our closets can quickly become a chaotic abyss of clothes, shoes, and accessories that we never actually wear. A well-organized closet isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating a space that makes getting dressed easier, boosts your confidence, and helps you feel more in control of your life.

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed by the mess in your closet (like me), this guide is for you! I’m going to walk you through how to declutter, organize, and maintain it (and yes, helps you finally wear all those beautiful clothes you’ve been hoarding!).

A disorganized closet can do more than just waste time in the morning. It can affect your mood, productivity, and even your self-esteem. Here’s why it’s worth tackling:

Save Time and Energy. A cluttered closet makes it harder to find what you need, leading to wasted time. With an organized closet, everything is easily accessible, so you can get ready faster and spend less energy deciding what to wear.

Boost Mental Clarity. Believe it or not, clutter can make us feel overwhelmed and stressed. When your closet is organized, it creates a sense of order and calm, which can help you feel more focused and at peace.

Make Space for What You Love. Decluttering helps you focus on the clothes and items that bring you joy. You’ll feel more confident and energized when you open your closet and see only things you love and wear.

Simplify Your Life. An organized closet allows you to simplify your wardrobe, making it easier to get dressed, plan outfits, and feel put-together every day.

You’ll go down memory lane and find clothes you forgot all about, clothes that bring back a memory and even throw out a whole bunch of clothes that aren't your style anymore!

Before you can organize, you need to declutter. Take everything out of your closet and lay it out where you can see it. Yes, it’s going to look like a bomb went off, but trust me, it’s part of the process!

Sort by Category. Group your clothes into categories like pants, shirts, jackets, shoes, etc. This way, you can go through each category at once.

Ask yourself, “Have I worn this in the last year?” If not, it’s probably time to say goodbye. Donate, sell, or recycle items that no longer serve you.

Be Honest with Yourself. If an item no longer fits, doesn’t match your current style, or you’ve simply outgrown it, let it go. Keep only the pieces that make you feel great and fit into your life now.

Now that you’ve decluttered, it’s time to organize! The way you organize your closet will depend on your personal style and your space, but here are some tips to help maximize your closet’s potential:

Invest in slim, non-slip hangers for your clothes. Velvet or wooden hangers work great for delicate fabrics, while sturdy metal hangers are perfect for heavier items like coats.

Arrange your clothes by type (pants, tops, dresses) or by color (light to dark, or rainbow) to make it even easier to find what you need.

Make use of vertical space with shelves and bins for shoes, accessories, and other items. Clear bins are fantastic for visibility, but woven baskets can add a stylish touch.

Label everything! Clear labels help you find things faster and keep the space organized long-term.

Shoes can quickly become the clutter culprit. Arrange them by type (boots, sandals, flats, heels) or by how often you wear them. Keep your most-used shoes at eye level for easy access, and store seasonal or rarely used pairs on higher shelves or under the bed.

Drawer dividers are a game-changer for keeping smaller items like scarves, jewelry, or belts organized. You’ll never have to dig through a messy drawer again!

For seasonal clothing (like heavy winter coats or summer dresses), use storage bins or under-bed storage to keep them out of sight but still accessible when the season changes. This frees up valuable closet space for your current wardrobe.

The key to keeping your closet organized is consistency. Once everything has a place, the most important thing is to stay on top of it.

At least once a month, revisit your closet. Donate or sell any items that you haven’t worn recently or that no longer serve you.

Before buying anything new, see whether you really need it or don’t have anything similar to it. If it doesn’t fit into your current wardrobe or isn’t something you love, pass it on. Stick to the “one in, one out” rule!

As you use your closet, make it a habit to put things back where they belong. It only takes a few seconds, and it’ll keep your closet looking pristine every day.

Over time, your style may change, and that’s okay! As your tastes change, reorganize your closet to reflect your new style.

An organized closet isn’t just about having a neat, tidy space, it’s about starting to create a lifestyle that’s easier and more intentional. When your closet is decluttered and organized, it’s like a weight has been lifted, and you can focus on what truly matters. Plus, it makes getting dressed in the morning a breeze!

Remember, It’s all about creating habits that support your personal style and help you feel more in control of your space. So, grab your bins, hangers, and labels, and start transforming your closet. You’ll be amazed at how much lighter you feel when your space reflects the clarity you need.
